fourth police officer died following a shootout between a suspect and a U.S. Marshals task force in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday (April 29).

Two of the deceased officers were identified as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott. Both worked for the Department of Adult Corrections and were assigned to the task force.

Joshua Eyer, who was a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, was shot while responding to the scene and died from his wounds in the hospital.

"I am truly grateful for his bravery, service, and ultimate sacrifice. He will never be forgotten, and we are forever indebted," Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings wrote on X.

A deputy U.S. Marshal was also killed.

A total of eight officers were shot after the suspect opened fire when the task force tried to serve a warrant on a convicted felon who was in possession of an illegal firearm. The injured officers are in stable condition.

The suspect, 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., was shot and killed by officers. Officials initially believed there were more than one shooters, but after interviewing a woman and a 17-year-old who were in the house, they believe Hughes was the only shooter and was moving between rooms in the home as he shot at officers during the hours-long standoff.
