There's a Facebook post going viral from a woman who canceled her baby shower because her family mocked the baby name she picked, Squire Sebastian Senator. Sadly, I completely understand what this mom is going through.
When it comes to odd baby names my children may be right there at the top of the list. You should see the facial expressions I get when I introduce my 4 year old son, Bear. Immediately I get asked, "Is that his real name" ... "Is it really spelled B.E.A.R?"
When I was pregnant with Bear my family wasn't thrilled with my name choice either although now they say the name fits him perfectly. My Mother-In-Law still refuses to call him Bear and calls him by his first name Owen instead.
If you name your child a non traditional name, be ready for the backlash. This particular Mom is naming her son Squire Sebastian Senator, that's just his first name! She will not allow him to be called by a nick name, only by his first full name and she followed up with a statement saying that no she was not drunk when she came up with the name. Because her family mocked her name choice, she cancelled the baby shower!
Although I don't necessarily like the name she chose, I relate to how she feels when it comes to how the family addresses her child. My family wanted to give my youngest son Zion a nickname rather than call him by his actual name. Regardless how you personally feel on a parents name choice, take the high road and respect their decision and keep the mocking to a minimum.
