Tracking Severe Weather Around Charlotte

Damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and scattered tornadoes move through the Southeast the morning of Monday, April 13th.

Sever Weather Highlights By Hour:

6 AM

  • Tree falls on home on Countrymens Court in Charlotte, rescue still on-going.
  • Medics report response to 78 calls in the Charlotte Area this morning.
  • A first wave of storms has moved through the Charlotte area, a second is expected to move in shortly.
  • Accident reported at Exit 54 on I-85 southbound, near Concord. Debris in road.

5 AM

  • A reported 31,000 Duke Energy customers are now without power in the Charlotte area. Check current power outages here.
  • Power outages total to 8,500 in Mecklenburg County, 3,000 in Gaston County, 2,500 in Catawba County, and 1,100 in York County.
  • Accident involving a tractor-trailer and two other cars reported on I-85 in Charlotte.
  • National Weather Service warns of life-threatening flooding in Boone, Blowing Rock, and surrounding cities.
  • An estimated 3-5 inches of rain has fallen, an additional 1 to 2 inches expected during the next few hours 
  • Numerous roads and structures reported to be flooded, including businesses, homes, and schools. Bamboo Road, Deerfield Drive, and Meadowview Road all reported to be under water. 
  • Flash Flood Emergency issued for Watauga County.

4 AM

  • 6,000 power outages in Mecklenburg and Catawba counties.
  • Multiple Severe Thunderstorm Warnings issued along I-77 from Virginia to South Carolina.
  • Mecklenburg and surrounding counties under Severe Thunderstorm Warning, with risk for 60 mph winds and possible tornadoes. The Sever Thunderstorm issued for Alexander, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cherokee, Cleveland, Davie, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan, and York.
  • CMPD reports South Tryon St. at Westinghouse Blvd. is closed, due to fallen power lines.

3 AM

  • Multiple reports of trees down in Burke County, NC, due to 50-60 mph winds.
  • Tornado Warning issued for Greenville and Pickens counties in South Carolina.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued for Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Cleveland, Catawaba, Lincoln, Iredell, and Rutherford counties with chance of 60 mph winds and risk of tornadoes.

Overnight

  • Charlotte-Metro Area, upstate South Carolina, and the western North Carolina on Tornado Watch.
