Carolinas Ranked in Top Five States for Shark Attacks

A new study by Safewise has been published analyzing both fatal and nonfatal shark attacks across the United States from 2010 to 2019. South Carolina ranked #3 while North Carolina holds the fifth spot.

South Carolina has had 38 shark attacks since 2010 while North Carolina has seen 32. However, three attacks have been reported in NC since last month. Florida, Hawaii and California round out the top five with 218, 73 and 37, respectively.

The study also found an increase in attacks in the Northeast due to warming ocean temperatures.

Although shark attacks may seem common on the coast, on average only 44 people are attacked out of the 91 million recreational swimmers in America.
