Songs of America Book Tour with Tim McGraw and Jon Meacham

Coming to Charlotte’s Belk Theater on June 23rd, 2019

Grammy award-winner Tim McGraw and Pulitzer-Prize winner Jon Meacham will embark on a national seven-city tour to support their book, Songs of America:Patriotism, Protest, and the Music that Made a Nation (Random House – On sale June 11, 2019).

Songs of America is at its heart a celebration of America and the music that has inspired us. Through years of strife and triumph, America has been shaped not only by our leaders, our words and our deeds, but by our music—by the lyrics, performers and instrumentals that have carried us through dark days and enabled us to celebrate bright ones. From the “Star Spangled Banner” to “Born in the USA,” McGraw and Meacham take us on a journey illuminating the eras of history through the music of those times—from the Revolutionary War to the present—that helped define American culture.

Exploring American history through music, McGraw and Meacham will give an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at what went into creating the book, and their friendship as they combine their individual perspectives as writer and artist to create a unique view of the role music has played in uniting and shaping our nation. Republican or Democrat, conservative or liberal, the Songs of America event will be both illuminating and entertaining. To add to the evening, listeners will get some special musical performances of songs from the book by McGraw.

Each ticket for the Songs of America Book Tour includes a copy of McGraw and Meacham’s forthcoming book, Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest, and the Music that Made a Nation (a $30 value).

The 7-city Songs of America Tour will launch June 10th and includes stops at Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center Charlotte on June 23rd at 7:30pm. Advance Praise for Songs of America

“The civil-rights movement couldn’t have happened without its music, and Jon Meacham and Tim McGraw have written a wonderful and moving account of how the sounds of America helped lead us toward what Dr. King called ‘the Beloved Community.’ This book brings it all back for me—the struggles and the triumphs, the tough days and the transcendent ones.”

Congressman John Lewis

“From hymns that swelled the hearts of revolutionaries to the spirituals that stirred citizens to spill blood for a more perfect Union and the blues and country-infused beats that aroused change in the 1960s, Jon Meacham and Tim McGraw form an irresistible duo—connecting us to music as an unsung force in our nation's history. Songs of America is not just a cultural journey—it strikes our deepest chords as Americans: patriotism, protest, possibility, creativity and at the root of it all, freedom of expression enshrined in our founding document.”

Doris Kearns Goodwin

“From the songs of the enslaved to the sounds of the civil-rights movement, from 'The Star-Spangled Banner' to Springsteen's 'The Rising' after 9/11, Jon Meacham and Tim McGraw have convened a concert in Songs of America. It is a glorious celebration of our diversity—and of the strength that comes from the myriad of voices of all races that make us who we are."

Quincy Jones

What a gem of a book! To read, to see, to hear the history of America, right and wrong, in song. This is an unusually well written and moving story; it’s about us and U.S. all at the same time—as intimate as it is majestic in scope and reach.”

Ken Burns
