Believe It Or Not: Charlotte Traffic Isn't So Bad

As crazy as it is to think while sitting in stopped traffic on I-77 or I-485, Charlotte ranks 42nd for most congested traffic out of 240 U.S. Cities.

According to the INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, cities that beat Charlotte for bad traffic include North Charleston, 37th; Nashville, Tenn., 23rd; Atlanta, 8th; and Miami, Fla., 10th. 

Charlotte commuters spend an average of 23.4 hours in traffic during peak times in 2016.  The most congested part of metro Charlotte? I-77 in north Mecklenburg which is currently experiencing lane widening and toll roads. 

INRIX is a transportation analytics firm that examines congestion in 1,064 cities in 38 countries to come up with its yearly list. 

The top 10 ranked cities are:

  1. Los Angeles (104.1 hours in traffic)
  2. Moscow, Russia (91.4)
  3. New York City (89.4)
  4. San Francisco (82.6)
  5. Bogota, Colombia (79.8)
  6. Sao Paulo, Brazil (77.2)
  7. London, England (73.4)
  8. Atlanta (70.8)
  9. Paris, France (65.3)
  10. Miami (64.8)

Other North and South Carolina cities include Wilmington, 63rd; Columbia, 99th; Greenville, SC, 110th; Durham, 139th; Winston-Salem, 163rd; and Greensboro, 232nd.
