As a race fan, I have been waiting for this weekend ever since I first heard about it and it's finally here!!!
It's ROVAL weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway!!! Yessssss!!!
If you have been hiding under a rock and haven't heard about the Roval yet, here's the lowdown... it's part road course, part oval, and should be a TON of fun to watch!
As opposed to Charlotte Motor Speedway having it's typical four turns, 13 more turns have been added into the infield by way of a road course. Drivers will take a hard left just past the exit of pit road, and that's where the road course portion of the Roval starts. Included in that section is a 35 foot drop in turns 6 and 7. After twisting and turning- and dropping 35 feet- drivers will then exit the road course near where they entered and travel around the traditional turns one and two, now known as turns 9 and 10. A slight chicane has been added on the backstretch before what-used-to-be turn three (and is now turn 13), and another chicane is between turn 14 (previously turn four) and the start finish line. This all adds up to 2.28 miles and 17 turns of excitement.
All of this, and it's an elimination race in the NASCAR Playoffs for the Cup guys, so when the dust settles Sunday, only 12 drivers will be left standing to go for the championship. A LOT is at stake here... and I think a lot of hurt feelings should be expected.
And I CAN'T WAIT!
I chatted with Greg Walter, Executive Vice President at Charlotte Motor Speedway, about the Roval. Here is our chat. And here is a map of the Roval.
The weather is going to be "Chamber of Commerce" PERFECT all weekend, and I can't think of a better way to spend this weekend than at the speedway for the Xfinity race Saturday and the Cup race on Sunday. Here is a link to buy tickets so you can be there too!
I saw this video that Hendrick Motorsports posted of Chase Elliott taking to the Roval. Check it out!
See you this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway for history to be made with the premiere of the Roval!
