The Holiday's were extra sweet for Dorothy Martin. On Christmas Eve, Dorothy decided to buy a $30 scratch off ticket at the Number Three Handy Mart on Blacksburg Road in Grover. To her surprise, within seconds Dorothy Martin instantly became a millionaire!
“I started at the bottom,” Martin said. “I didn’t match any of the numbers. When I got to the top I closed my eyes and scratched. When I opened them I couldn’t believe it. I just thought, ‘Could this be real?’” To make sure her eyes weren't deceiving her she went back inside the store to have the clerk check the ticket. “I told her, ‘If this is real, you better call the paramedics now. I’m sure I’ll have a heart attack,’” Martin said.
Thankfully she didn't have a heart-attack but she DID win MILLIONS of dollars. She had the option of 20 payments of $500,000 a year or take home a lump sum of $6 million. She chose the lump sum and took home a little over 4 million dollars (after the required state and federal tax withholdings.) What would YOU do if you became a millionaire overnight? Ms. Dorothy plans to get a new home and also help her children and great grandchildren. One thing is for sure, it's a great start to a new year for Ms. Dorothy and her family!
